The mission of the Connecticut Democracy Center is to inspire people of all ages to engage in civic life and strengthen their communities.

We envision a society where everyone is empowered to participate in our democracy.

Our Guiding Principles

  1.  We believe that a healthy democracy depends on well-informed, inspired, and empowered people who use their voices to work across differences for the common good.

  1.  We believe informed, constructive civic behaviors strengthen both our communities and every level of our participatory democracy.

  1.  We believe critical thinking and information literacy support healthy democracies by enabling people to analyze and understand complicated issues, evaluate even the most divisive from multiple perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to solving political, social, and civic challenges.

  1.  We are fundamentally a nonpartisan organization. We do not advocate for any position or issue except the active, informed engagement of people from all points of view.

  1.  We strive to be conveners and connectors of people in order to inform and empower every individual’s unique contribution to freedom, justice and the common good.

  1.  We value balance, accuracy and authenticity as the cornerstones of our programming philosophy.

  1.  We commit to creating a welcoming environment where everyone can explore current events, historical contexts and contentious subjects while planting the seeds of productive and respectful civic friendships.

  1.  We “walk our talk,” making our best effort to practice constructive civic behaviors inside our organization, in our communities and when engaging with our audiences.

The Connecticut Democracy Center (CTDC) provides people with a lifetime pathway to active citizenship and the tools to take civic action in their own communities.

Founded in 1998, The Connecticut Public Affairs Network (CPAN) is the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization at the heart of the CTDC. Beginning with the launch of CT-N in 1999 and the start of its relationship with Connecticut’s Old State House in 2008, CPAN’s successful public-private partnerships with the Connecticut General Assembly have provided the first critical milestones along our Lifetime Pathway. Complimented and augmented by our independent initiatives, CPAN’s entire family of civic education and engagement programs now form the Connecticut Democracy Center.
